We have a contract! After months of bargaining sessions and a lot of work, The State News Guild membership has approved our first collective bargaining agreements. Here’s some of the highlights:
This week, members of The State News Guild were among the scores of McClatchy employees who had their jobs eliminated in the latest round of layoffs. These included valuable members of the Columbia newsroom, including:

Yesterday, McClatchy laid off more than 90 unionized media workers across 17 publications.
The departure of these talented reporters, visual journalists & writers will immediately leave gaping holes in local coverage for dozens of communities across the US.
Today we celebrate our union’s second birthday, and our first birthday with a collective bargaining agreement!

I was an infant during Phil Petty's last year at South Carolina. Despite it, I've heard stories about him and how he helped turn around the struggling football program at USC. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
