This is not the first time the U.S. has sanctioned BGI. Recent deaths in Chinese gene-editing trials put the sector under further scrutiny. But despite it all, BGI is still ranked the world’s number one company in biological sciences. thewirechina.com/2026/09/13/…

Seth Center: "The basic premise of this entire conversation is that somehow, if one side can just convince the other side to understand [the importance of AI safety], everything would be better... "I don’t know if that’s the right premise. I think the correct premise of a cooperative discussion between the United States and China is that it is in the respective self-interests of both countries to ensure that these systems, as they’re deployed in different domains, act as they’re intended to act." @eliotcxchen @thewirechina thewirechina.com/2026/10/22/…

Beijing is pouring money into science. The country's state-backed research funder has already funded 12,000 new projects this year — 50 percent more than the number of projects added in 2025, and nearly double the projects funded by its U.S. equivalent. This is surprising given that MiraclePlus was itself a victim of Ding's duplicity. As I reported from his trial, Ding pretended to be his boss for a reference check, creating a fake email and going as far as downloading voice modification software ahead of a call w/ MiraclePlus:
US sanctioning incubator YC China successor MiraclePlus miracleplus.com/team/ over work with convicted former Google engineer Linwei Ding, but did not also sanction any of the MiraclePlus management, whiuch includes founder Lu Qi, a former executive at Baidu, Microsoft, and Yahoo. How many US LPs are in the MiraclePlus funds?
