One of the best and most counterintuitive bits of mix advice I ever received was: don't pay attention to the track you're adjusting, listen to everything else instead It works. Try setting your main vocal level while listening to the snare or the guitars rather than the vocal itself. Pay attention to how they interact and mask one another. In a dialed in mix, they'll lock together and fit like a glove. In a rough mix they'll fight for space, blur together, or shift unpredictably When you focus on the other elements while adjusting something, you force your brain to hear masking, contrast, and movement. By shifting your attention off the thing you’re touching, you naturally make decisions that prioritize relationships instead of single track tone shaping It also helps you avoid over processing. When you only listen to the source you’re working on, especially in solo, every tiny imperfection can become an issue. But when you place it in context and listen elsewhere, you can instantly tell whether that “problem” actually matters or not Leveling a vocal by listening to how the snare pokes through, or EQing guitars by paying attention to how clearly the bass line reads, keeps your adjustments anchored in the musical function of the parts. You stop trying to make each track sound “good” and start shaping the mix as a single instrument, which is key to a great mix

5 signs of a good mix. 1. Good balance. Nothing is too loud or too quiet. 2. Mix sounds good at both low and high levels. 3. No artifacts, clicks, pops etc. 4. Mix carries the emotions and always develops. 5. Mix translates well to other audio playback systems. "Good" is not universal ofc but refers to genre, idea etc.
