Normally, the combined cost of freight and insurance represents around 3% of the total cost of crude or petroleum products.
By the end of January 2026, the total share of freight and insurance for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) from the Middle East to East Asia was around 5% of the total cost.
By the end of October 2026, however, this share averaged 30% of the total cost.
These exceptionally elevated costs are, in turn, transmitted across the entire value chain. They increase and prolong the cost burden on producing and consuming countries and place additional inflationary pressures on the global economy.

Sodium-ion cathodes can be $3–5/kWh cheaper than LFP.
But lower energy density means higher manufacturing costs, more materials and more containers per MWh.

Growth prospects for the top oil field services providers are improving heading into 2027, driven by international expansion in offshore developments, renewed exploration and efforts to boost production from existing assets.
Deepwater projects remain a bright spot with activity broadening across Latin America, Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Asia, and final investment decisions expected to increase by more than 30pc in 2026, according to the world's biggest oil field services contractor SLB. A growing number of US shale producers that are gearing up for international expansion will also prove a catalyst for growth.

A major investment in the future of U.S. copper is moving forward.
Freeport has approved the Bagdad expansion, which will more than double the operation’s mining and milling rates and increase annual long-term copper production to over 400 million pounds per annum.
“We are pleased to proceed with the Bagdad expansion, an important step in advancing Freeport’s U.S. copper growth strategy. This low-risk brownfield project builds on Bagdad’s substantial reserve base, long operating history, existing infrastructure and experienced workforce to deliver new U.S. copper and molybdenum production and further strengthen Freeport’s position as America’s Copper Champion®.
