60 years after the first Carnival, its spirit is as strong as ever. We're backing organisers with £4.6m to strengthen safety measures, support more stewards and help visitors and residents enjoy the weekend with confidence.

.@TerrorismPolice are leading an investigation into a credible threat to those attending the UK Ijtima festival this weekend. I thank Suffolk Police, Counter Terrorism Policing, and the organisers for their swift and effective response that undoubtably saved lives. Twelve individuals have now been arrested. I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims. We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.

I've decided to leave this platform and my Department will too. A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate. It isn't healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it.
