GDP= C+ I + G+ (X-M) C is household consumption, I is investment, G is government purchases, X is exports, and M is imports. Imported bananas are already counted inside C when Americans buy and eat them. The -M term is there only to cancel that out so GDP does not treat Brazilian production as American production. The two effects therefore offset: • Buying \$2 billion of Brazilian bananas raises C by \$2 billion. • The same purchase raises M by \$2 billion. Net change in measured GDP from the transaction itself is zero. Americans receive \$2 billion of real goods; the dollars that leave the country are the payment for those goods. If the country simply stops buying the bananas, both C and M fall by the same amount. GDP is unchanged, but households have fewer bananas. That is a welfare loss, not a “saving.” The identity also shows why a bilateral goods deficit with one country (Brazil) is not automatically a national loss.
