Wanted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a largely empty room at the UN General Assembly on Thursday. Around 77 delegates left the chamber in protest before he began to speak. Among the representatives who stayed behind were those of Israel, the UK, the US, Canada, the UAE, Japan and Bahrain, according to the Palestine Chronicle. Netanyahu travelled to New York for the assembly's meeting of world leaders, despite an outstanding arrest warrant against him from the international criminal court, issued amid Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza. A similar walkout happened when he spoke at the assembly last year.

Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds claimed “no economist supports rent controls” on Question Time last night. After Novara Media’s @ayocaesar said the policy would help improve the lives of young people in the UK, Reynolds interrupted in an apparent bid to dismiss the idea as frivolous. But his claim is false. In a July 2026 paper for the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, economist Beth Stratford and co-author Joe Beswick argue strongly for rent controls. “The historical record across Europe shows that the most decisive improvements in housing affordability in the 20th century came from the direct regulation of rents,” they wrote. They add that to be successful, the policy must be well-designed and have “a coherent package of parallel policies”. This includes applying rent controls between tenancies, so that landlords cannot resent rents to market rates when a tenant leaves.

Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon was arrested while protesting Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at a UN general assembly in New York on Thursday. Hannah Einbinder from HBO show Hacks, WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning and Indya Moore from Pose were also among more than 100 people detained outside the UN headquarters. Footage showed police cuffing Thelma & Louise star Sarandon, who was wearing a T-shirt that read: Fund People Not Bombs. Inside the building, an estimated 77 UN delegates walked out as Netanyahu took to the stage. A UN commission of inquiry concluded last year that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. Actor Elliot Page was also present at the demo – organised by Jewish Voice for Peace – alongside New York City councillors and Democratic congressional candidates.

And she hit out at two fellow panellists – business secretary Jonathan Reynolds and shadow work secretary Helen Whately – who she said had steered the discussion away from racism. “I feel like I’m going completely nuts because there are mobs of men styling themselves as paramilitaries and both of you have had more to say about refugees and asylum seekers than you have [about] racism, which I just think is completely obscene,” she said.
