At 18 Vanessa Del Rio was programming computers. Then stole cars across America for two years, got arrested, ended up on the streets of New York as a prostitute, moved to strip clubs, shot her first adult film for $150 to cover rent. Over 100 films. One of the biggest names in the industry. Arrested for drugs. Did time. Quit when AIDS hit and producers still didn't care. In the video below, she sits down for a rare 1986 TV interview - and says something nobody expected her to say. The only real victims in p*rnography are the people in front of the camera. She said you lose something of yourself. Said she didn't know how to love because she was channeling everything through the camera. Had to shut down certain emotions just to function - and didn't realize what that cost her until years later. She grew up with violence at home. Father beat her. A relative made advances on her as a child. None of it came into focus until she was sitting in a jail cell after a drug arrest, looking at her life from the outside for the first time. She started bodybuilding in jail. First decision she'd made purely for herself in years. Retired at the peak. Not because the money stopped. Because she grew out of it. Said the industry had gotten worse since she left. Women coming in by the truckload. One-day shoots. No budgets. Just a meat market. She saw it clearly now because she was finally outside it.
