It's finally out (and yes, I'm posting this a few weeks late), but in an effort to be better about sharing science, check out our recent paper:

Out now! Host genetics influence gut microbiome structure. A-blood-type-linked carbs secreted to mucus fuel gut microbes. Kudos to the amazing teamwork of @HermieHarm2388,D. Zhernakova, @DaomingWang1 @_LeiLiu @GroMicrobiome @UMCGgenetica @researchumcg 🙌 nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Fantastic paper by David Sannino and the @AngertLab untangling the biology of giant bacteria residing in the guts of fish
Truly massive bacteria—one million times the volume of E. coli—live inside the unicornfish. Explore its genome and uncover the secrets behind the gargantuan size of this bacterial behemoth. In PNAS: ow.ly/sxsA50QkK1M

New preprint out of the lab. This one was a long time coming but well worth the wait!
Excited it's finally submitted! In this paper, we begin to identify the genetic basis of enhanced growth of Akkermansia biwaensis on 2'FL.

Not sure how far this will reach on 'Ten'- but I will be searching for a TT position this Fall generally in the areas of microbial ecology and genetics. Bonus! I come with experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Feel free to DM any announcements :)

‼️Coming soon‼️
We will be advertising for TWO marine biologist/ecologist tenure-track positions in the CSUN biology department. I will post the ad here when it is published in the coming months. #jobs 🌊🐙🦀🐠 – at Los Angeles, CA
If you don't have grant funding to pay for publishing articles, what do you do? I just paid out-of-pocket, and *ouch*.
Through the hard work of two TAs for the Micro lab (Kayla Perri and Maha Abdelhaseib, not on twitter) and surveys predating the pandemic, we now proudly present mdpi.com/2382176 #mdpieducation via @EducSci_MDPI
Working with gut microbial samples, where some "stink" more (and differently!) than others (likely differences in sulfated compounds). I get excited every time, but I don't think the lab appreciates it as much as I do.
Also, would love to include this in the manuscript, but I don't have stink quantification - other than a 1-5 scale and descriptors (ie. "smelled like bleu with notes of skunk")

Finally out! This work describing a genetic system for a very important and cool gut commensal has been a labor of love. Massive amounts of work by @lauren282012, Per Malkus & @ValdiviaLab. Special thanks to @barton_lab and Lawrence David’s for being most excellent collaborators.
📢Out now in @NatureMicrobiol:
A genetic system for Akkermansia muciniphila reveals a role for mucin foraging in gut colonization and host sterol biosynthesis gene expression

Pretty incredible to see almost 330 of you folks in the first week of our existence!! Glad to see this kind of support for building a networking of Queer and Trans microbiologists...something we desperately need!
So we have to ask: What would you like to see our network do?
