Q. What 3 most important issues do you believe our profession faces?
A. The first thing I think about in terms of important issues facing our profession is the increasing reliance that the medical system places on imaging and the increasing workload and responsibility this places on radiologists.
The next issue is artificial intelligence (AI), but not for the reasons that most people outside of radiology might think. The incorporation of AI has been extremely helpful so far in terms of increasing radiologist efficiency, and it may end up being the very thing to help us overcome the hurdles presented by the first issue. Ultimately, I think figuring out how to safely and effectively use AI is the actual issue that our profession faces (as opposed to the idea that its existence threatens ours).
Finally, as medicine becomes more and more subspecialized, knowledge becomes more granular; because of this, it's easy to lose connection with what's happening in other specialties and become blind to new knowledge coming from research in other areas. I believe inter-specialty communication and collaboration are key to keeping one's knowledge base relevant and to advancing medical knowledge overall, both within and outside of radiology.

Feels like yesterday when I just started to learn about #radiology. Now I'm #chiefresident (and still feel like I'm just starting to learn radiology).
