GPs are busier than ever. If you ever wondered how “busyness” affects consultation outcomes? A new paper lead by the brilliant Hanifa Pilvar from @OxPrimaryCare has some answers. More referrals, more antibiotics, fewer psychotropic prescriptions. rdcu.be/d2Mq4

More evidence on health inequality from @Ann__Raymond, myself, Hannah Rose Douglas, @laurie_rj and @LivUniIPH colleagues. Hopefully the detail will help inform policy in new ways. 🤞
NEW: Over the next two decades, cases of chronic pain, anxiety, depression and type 2 diabetes will increase faster in the most deprived areas compared to the least deprived. Our future government must take action to boost #HealthIn2040. Read more 👉 health.org.uk/publications/h…

Excellent to get a cite from the Secretary of State @VictoriaAtkins. Do read the report. Most of the rise in illness is coming from population ageing (rather than ppl getting sicker at a given age). @HealthFdn @tlswatt @Ann__Raymond
Replying to @VictoriaAtkins
We need to act to stop a rise in preventable diseases to make the NHS sustainable. That’s why I will set out a plan for improving the prevention, early diagnosis and management of our biggest health conditions. t.ly/Ww3Z9

Thank you so much for writing this up! I’ve been presenting a slide on this for ages. The imbalance between growth in demand for PC services and investment in PC is very clear if you have access to good data…

Quoting @Strategy_Unit: “In some ways it’s incredible that we know so little about the activity levels of this pivotal NHS service.” …I can’t think of a way in which it is not incredible.

NHS mobile lung trucks have diagnosed hundreds of people like Fran with lung cancer at an earlier stage than before. Now, those who were previously most at risk are the most likely to receive an early diagnosis. Thanks to her early diagnosis, Fran is cancer-free. 🙌

The data tell a strong story: investment in health has been inconsistent, both over time and across services. But flat spend once we account for demographics ignores growth in chronic illness. So productivity or ⬇️ quality must be balancing changing needs? @jappleby123

The argument that’s often made for why we need an alternative model to the NHS or radical reform is that the NHS is unsustainable. The latest to make the argument is Sajid Javid. But *is* the NHS unsustainable? A Friday🧵

Anyone else noticed Conservative ministers saying “I get it” for the last 3 years? @MattHancock whenever he spoke about lockdowns @BorisJohnson on the Sue Gray report @KwasiKwarteng @trussliz “I get it and I have listened” Is there a folksy comms mastermind in the wings?

Price promotions add complexity to our hectic food environments. Encouraging shoppers to over-buy unhealthy food (more than healthy food). Price promotions give the illusion that we save money, but in reality we just buy more then eat / drink / waste more. 2/3

Price promotions can be separated into “multi buy” (3for2) and pure discounts (-50%). Both increase likelihood and quantity we buy and are more common in name brand unhealthy food. Both should be in scope for obesity policy that makes it easier to make healthy food choices.
