p.p.p.s. I don't mean to devalue the contribution of Boyden and Deisseroth's groups because they have done a huge amount to push the field forward. However, I think the bulk of those contributions came after the 2005 paper, in the refinement and dissemination of the technology.

I don't know this paper in question, but it is not hard for me to believe that much of the data added was in frustrating cycles of reviewer 'requests' for additional experiments. So what could have been a nice series of papers slowly becomes one giant monolith 2/

Many commonalities (solving puzzles to make a diagnosis, fitting pieces into a larger clinical/scientific picture) in both endeavors. Roles are complementary and improve capabilities in the other area. Curiosity and investigation are central to high-level practice of medicine.
