'How Scientific Is Cognitive Load Theory Research Compared to the Rest of Educational Psychology?' 🔓
Pretty good actually:
- Nearly all CLT articles (2020-2023) employed experimental methods, with randomized controlled trials being common, allowing for reliable causal inferences
- CLT research shows consistent use of experimental and intervention-based methodologies
- practice recommendations are based on solid evidence, offering "reliable insights for educators".

EXPLICIT TEACHING ESSENTIALS! Boosting learning and participation with these evidence-based methods:
✅ 1. TAPPLE: A reliable method for checking understanding and keeping lessons moving.
🤝 2. Active Participation: Engage students by getting them to say, do, or write something to elicit evidence of learning.
⚖️ 3. Rule of Two: Provide a worked example, then give a similar matching problem for students to tackle.
🏆 4. 80% Success Rate: Strive for high success to ensure readiness for the next step.
🏗️ 5. Fade Scaffolds: Gradually shift support—first tell (fade), then ask (fade), and remind students as needed.

For parents who want to help their kids with a hard school concept but don't want them to use AI directly:
Show the LLM the problem your kid is stuck on and prompt: "how can I, as a parent, explain to my kid, grade N, how to solve this" and then use the advice to help tutor them

More evidence that a well prompted LLM can help learning from a randomized controlled trial at Harvard: “here we show that students learn more than twice as much in less time with an AI tutor compared to an active learning classroom, while also being more engaged and motivated.”
