Just a reminder that I'm hosting a webinar with Caroline Webb at 4pm UK time today. We will be discussing her new bestselling book Leadership Intelligence. During the webinar, we will discuss the leadership principles that are behind the book. I love the practical tools and frameworks for leaders that the book covers so I will ask Caroline to take us through some of my favourite ones. There will be time for questions and answers. The session is aimed at leaders in health and care but the learning is generic so it's open to all leaders who want to improve their leadership practice. There is still time to sign up: events.teams.microsoft.com/e… I hope to see you there. Helen
“Change begins with me.” When the systems we work in feel immovable, it’s easy to feel we have little power to make a difference. What if the part we can influence is bigger than we think? Next Friday, 16th October, I’ll be in conversation with Caroline Webb about her new best selling book, Leadership Intelligence, exploring what its ideas mean for people working in health and care. What I particularly value about Caroline’s book is how it draws on science (psychology, neuroscience and behavioural economics) to offer practical tools for making better decisions, helping messages land, strengthening difficult relationships and leading through uncertainty. The central message isn’t that we can change everything. It’s that we don’t always have to wait for other people or circumstances to change before we can act differently ourselves. Join Caroline and I for an hour to hear directly from Caroline and explore how we can help people achieve more together. 📅 Wednesday 16 October 2026 🕓 4–5pm UK time 💻 Online via Microsoft Teams Everyone is welcome from anywhere in the world. For those in the UK, it will be an inspiring way to end your Friday. Register here: lnkd.in/eZiNspCr Please share with colleagues across health and care who might find this conversation valuable. You don't need to have read the book. Here is a previous post that I wrote about Caroline's book: lnkd.in/p/egqjRUni

An important reminder from The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel: “The highest form of wealth is the ability to wake up every morning and say, ‘I can do whatever I want today.’ People want to become wealthier to make them happier. Happiness is a complicated subject because everyone’s different. But if there’s a common denominator in happiness—a universal fuel of joy—it’s that people want to control their lives. The ability to do what you want, when you want, with who you want, for as long as you want, is priceless. It is the highest dividend money pays. Use money to gain control over your time, because not having control of your time is such a powerful and universal drag on happiness. The ability to do what you want, when you want, with who you want, for as long as you want to, pays the highest dividend that exists in finance.”

This paragraph by Joseph Campbell hits hard: “If you see your path laid out in front of you — step one, step two, step three — you only know one thing. It is not your path. Your path is created in the moment of action. If you can see it laid out in front of you, you can be sure it is someone else’s path. That is why you see it so clearly.”

I have learned that while fear is contagious, other people's fears may not be the most accurate information about the future - but information about their psychology. Relevant for the times we are in now.

An idea from Atomic Habits: When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running.

"The habit of living within your means and accumulating capital early in life gives you a degree of independence that is impossible to measure in dollar terms. It means you never have to stay in a dishonest job, you never have to work for a boss you don't respect, and you never have to make compromised decisions out of financial desperation. Financial discipline isn't just about accumulating money; it is about buying your freedom so you can live and think on your own terms." - Charlie Munger
