Interesting that some of the most interesting new politicians like @GinaHinojosaTX are expressly rejecting framing like "first Latina", instead focusing on a message of economic populism.
There is much to celebrate this week, but I want to call specific attention to historic gains Democratic women made in representation: - For the first time in history, over 100 Democratic women will serve in the U.S. House. - At least 16 Democratic women will serve in the Senate. - At least 14 Democratic women will serve as governors, a record high. - A record of 2,600 Democratic women running for seats in state legislatures helped flip 12 majorities and break 11 supermajorities. - Four states elected their first woman governor: Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio, and Tennessee. - @KeishaBottoms will be the first Black woman to serve as a governor. - @DebHaalandNM will be the first Native American woman to serve as a governor. - @GinaHinojosaTX will be the first Latina to serve as governor of Texas. - @peggyflanagan will be the first Native American woman to serve in the Senate. I am beyond excited to see these extraordinary people and public servants tackle accountability, affordability, and our other challenges to make life better for everyone in this country. Congratulations to everyone who ran: win or lose, fighting for what's right is always worth it.

I can't see a Republican winning the next presidency. Vance's only chance would be to separate himself from Trump, to criticize parts of his presidency. Trump will savage Vance if he dares. The curse of Big Man politics - no successor grows in the leader's shadow.
Trump on JD Vance: "Maybe he won't run"

Nothing sums up the sense of a brand new start like Schumer's 75-year old wizened face.
As Schumer says the new Dem majority prepared to take on Trump, I asked him about the new Dems in his ranks — like Adam Hamilton and Troy Jackson — who want him out as leader and say they won’t vote for him. “The issue is not me. I'll be reelected as majority leader. But the issue is focusing on the American people and what they want.”

~ 30 Bangers for #Noirvember ~ Day 3: “A Hell of a Woman” 📚 Jim Thompson, 1954 An unreliable account of a domestic robbery and its aftermath that brims with strangeness, paranoia, and flat-out brilliance. Just another day at the office for Jim Thompson.

A lot of people calmly driving by an IED left on a road in Northeast Colombia (looks to be the EPL - I haven't heard from those lunatics for a while).

A fear of another 9/11 as a result of the Michigan vote is not a valid concern nor one that should be taken seriously.
MICHIGAN VOTER: “I'm from New York, I have my kids here, so I just hope I never have to see anything like what happened with 9/11 again…go out there, vote. We lost a lot of good people that day...I hope this hate stops." GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

Muchas lecciones para la izquierda colombiana de Brasil; y, como siempre lo han hecho, se esforzarán al máximo por ignorar hasta la última de ellas.

Each fact she states is correct, and god knows we need skepticism of the War on Drugs. But this is a classic case of embracing theory and leaving the real world far behind.

"...walking past the chips, the Big Mama sausages and the candy bars..." Local news has space to be fun like this - dunk on the alleged mugger's awful fashions, end with the gimmicky face behind the bars shot.
D.C. police are asking for the community’s help to identify a suspect wanted in connection with a violent robbery inside a Shell gas station in the 900 block of Brentwood Road, Northeast. According to police, the suspect approached a victim inside the store at the gas station, assaulted the victim, stole their property and fled the scene.

A new GEICO commercial — "Cancelled Plans" — is about a couple celebrating a cancelled dinner with friends, so they can put on their PJs and fall into the couch to watch TV with popcorn and pizza. I don't want to be some annoying leisure-time scold (pizza is good) or act like some media-studies nerd who treats a car insurance commercial like a Rosetta Stone of modern life. But, like, we can all see what's happening here, yes? The generation that spends less and less time with people; that reduced hosting and dinner parties by 70% in 50 years; and increased time spent at home by 2 hours so far this century; also celebrates when the few plans they do have are canceled, and expects other people to understand the cause for celebration when plans with people outside the home are scrapped. The problem is not loneliness. Truly lonely people are desperate for social connection. The whole joke here is that everybody knows that everybody knows that we don't want to be around people so much. Loneliness is literally the opposite of the problem. youtube.com/watch?v=HcKvevKi…

A good story in the New Yorker on covering the Syrian civil war as a freelancer while living on the Turkish border. I'm pretty sure I'm that "bastard". I knew Harvester and remember telling him about the sniper just missing me in Aleppo, joking I had "bled for Syria."

The other question he raises: did media blackouts on journalists being abducted lead to more journalists getting kidnapped? Probably yes. If you weren't in the right secret Facebook groups, you couldn't know how dangerous Syria was for reporters.

.@MichaelSctMoore as someone who's lived this more than anyone ever would, what are your thoughts?

I argued we should report on these cases. But others urged a deference to the families' wishes. The problem is that families are always advised to ask for a blackout - but it's not necessarily always the best response to a kidnapping. Each case is different.

The story does a good job of revealing the insanity of that border along the war, how the conflict turned many optimistic revolutionaries into bitter, violent men in search of revenge. And it conjures the sheer weirdness of life in the one and only Hotel Istanbul.
