Midpack ultrarunner. I write about the science of what happens to ordinary people when they keep moving for an absurdly long time.

“Just two marathons to go.” Someone called that out on a descent during my first 100 km at Buffalo Stampede, and the strange thing is that it sounded like good news. Sixteen months earlier, 56 km had felt almost unimaginable. What changed? 🧵

There’s a practical trick in all this: carry less of the future. You don’t have to run 100 km in your head. Just get to the next aid station, the next climb, sometimes the next corner. The distance is still there; you just stop trying to hold all of it at once.

So when did 50 km stop sounding ridiculous? I can’t point to a single day. The distance hadn’t changed, but the runner carrying it had.

At 92 km, a volunteer took my flasks before I could say anything. Ninety seconds of help I’m still thinking about. Why do ultras feel easier with someone beside us? Stories from the trails and just enough science, in The Dirt Division: dirtdivision.substack.com/p/…

Great to see our downhill running study featured in @tombarrett’s The Dirt Division 🏃‍♂️ An interesting take on the experience of fatigue in an ultra, from Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Wilsons Prom. Rewarding to see research make an impact outwith academia 🏔️ dirtdivision.substack.com/p/…

It’s been a while. Somewhere along the way I started running ultramarathons, then asking awkward questions about why my legs stopped working. Just started a substack called The Dirt Division: trail stories and enough science to make better decisions. dirtdivision.substack.com
