Check out these stunning images of Super Typhoon In-Fa in its annular 'donut' form that were made by NOAA-20 from polar orbit earlier today. Just absolutely stunning structure. Looks very tasty. NOAA-20 also did a little magic trick, turning night into day.

one of the craziest things to consider is the terrain-influenced wind gusts in local areas. Those 250+mph gusts found from sondes certainly impacted elevated areas, and if you add in the "boosting" effect from downsloping and funneling, its possible some spots saw 300mph+ gusts.

1 year ago today, we witnessed one of the most extreme Atlantic satellite loops of our time. As the sun rose over the Caribbean Sea, Category 5 Hurricane Melissa became the STRONGEST Atlantic Hurricane in recorded history. 190 MPH sustained winds. Gusts up to ~252 MPH (the highest wind gust ever measured by dropsonde globally). An 892 MBAR eye of worldwide-record dryness. And, the most intense known storm to ever landfall in the island of Jamaica.

That would likely explain some of the images of extreme EF4 tornado esque tree damage in spots with whole groves of trees debarked and reduced to splinters.

Exactly 1 year ago, I entered core of Cat 5 #MELISSA in #Jamaica. Tied as strongest #hurricane impact in N America. Winds: FEROCIOUS. Gusts well over 200 mph. Enough to reduce concrete to rubble. All I remember: White void of energy swallowing the building. Ear-splitting scream.
