Because other than Ireland, none of the colonies was an integral part of the UK the way Scotland is. So separation was a lot easier. Nor did most leave with massive budget deficits/debts, which Scotland has in spades.
And Ireland struggled for decades after independence in 1922 with low growth, stagnant living standards, engrained poverty and high emigration, especially of its young. Indeed it was stuck on the economic doldrums til early 1980s.
Nobody should deny Scotland can separate if it wants. But those who advocate it should be honest about the difficulties/hardships it will bring — instead of sprinkling it all with Nationalist fairy dust and dismissing critics who bring facts to the table as ‘charlatans’ and fake Scots. You should be confronting the real issues instead. But name-calling is an easier cop out.
Replying to @afneil
LOLZ one wonders how ALL of the multitude of countries previously linked to the British empire managed their conversion into independent entities without economic and cultural devastation? You sir, are a charlatan. An English Nat masquerading as a 'Scot'.

Apparently Brexit made our trade with the EU 'go to ruin'... 🤔
In reality, the UK sold £181.4bn worth of goods to the EU in 2025.
And the share of UK goods exports going to the EU, at 47.2%, was the same as in 2015.

Oooh, just look at that Burnham bounce
YouGov - Sky - Times voting intention
LAB 24%(-3)
CON 23%(+3)
RefUK 21%(-1)
LDEM 12%(+1)
GRN 11%(nc)
Oct 11-12
Pollster note: The changes are within the margin of error, so it's difficult to distinguish signal from noise, but I suspect there is some degree of "conference bounce" there, with the Tories getting a boost from their coverage, and Labour declining again as the temporary impact of their own conference fades.
It may well be a temporary Tory boost, but for the record it means this is the first time that we have had Reform back in third place since 2024 (it’s technically the first time since early 2024 – but we didn’t poll between the election and January 2025 while we were reviewing methods, so we don’t know exactly when Reform overtook the Tories).

This is completely unacceptable. Nobody should be suspended from their job for the views they hold.
Nobody has the right to prevent someone from earning a living because they do not feel “comfortable” with their views. That is not how our society or economy works.
The thought police and the actual police are creating an environment of fear. Employers should not kowtow to the censorious tactics of certain employees.
@sophielouisecc, please let @SpeechUnion know if we can be of any assistance.
I’ve been suspended at work since July following an anonymous grievance (not anonymous as the company accidentally revealed who it was) that said: “Sophie’s views are much more extreme than the perspectives of someone I’d feel comfortable working with.”
My employer refused to obtain witness accounts I believe are essential to my defence and refused permission for me to contact colleagues to obtain them. I’m pursuing legal action.
I also reported that my manager said he didn’t want to hire white people because they were “lazy”. Both white managers at our workplace were suspended at the same time (me being one of them) I’m deeply concerned about how this has been handled.
With finding work already so difficult for young people, this has been incredibly hard. I don’t believe I should be facing this. If anyone has advice, or a shoulder to cry on, I’d really appreciate it.

A large tree trunk has been uncovered beneath a glacier in the Alps, dated to around 6,000 years ago.
The species is Swiss stone pine.
Today, trees of that type cannot grow at that altitude because it is far too cold.
This means that when that tree was alive, the climate there had to be warmer than today.
6,000 years ago aligns with the Holocene climate optimum, a time when temperatures were far higher than now, even with far less atmospheric CO2.
Earth's climate is cyclical and Mother Nature self-regulates.
Narratives of doom serve political aims, not reality.

The world runs on fossil fuels; renewables are mostly not what you think:
80.5% of all global energy (not just electricity) from fossil fuels
Renewables 14.5%
most from biomass (8.4%)
Solar + wind just 2.9%

This is among the most wicked deceptions many of the pro-migration lobby make - that a) women *must* fear all the men who live around them, and b) because bad men exist, women *must* accept more bad men moving in or be branded bad people themselves.

The outrage from Labour at Reform pocketing £72million from a couple of crypto guys makes me laugh.
Do you know how much trade unions have paid to Burnham’s mob between 2006-2025?
£200million in donations and affiliation fees. Yes £200million.
For that money they run the country when there’s a Labour administration.
And you wonder why we have a new Employment Rights Act where you can now have sick pay from Day One ( the number of week one sickness has rocketed) and maternity rights from Day One which means new employees are turning up having just been hired to announce they will shortly be away for a year.
Almost impossible to fire the most criminal of employees without giving them a payoff because they know dimwitted employment tribunal judges are on their side.
Our nation is bankrupt because it’s at the beck and call of the unions and there £200million.
Never forget it.
