Have you heard of a town called PATIGI in Kwara State Nigeria? Patigi sits right along the banks of the mighty River Niger ,the natural border separating Kwara from Niger State. The name Patigi pronounced as “Pategi”itself comes from the Nupe language, meaning "Small Hill". Established as a royal refuge for the indigenous Yissazzhi Nupe royal dynasty. When the British military moved to conquer Bida in 1897 With Idrisu Gana I, as the first Etsu of Pategi in 1898, birthing a proud, un-diluted Nupe kingdom Patigi sits in the fertile southern Guinea savannah zone along the lower Niger basin. It experiences warm, tropical temperatures and long rainy seasons that turn its vast lowland plains into natural, waterlogged basins ideal for swamp farming. •In rural Patigi communities like Tankpafu, cassava farming has sparked a fascinating local economic revolution. The local women completely dominate the post-harvest Garri processing chain. •Because many of their wealthy female cassava processors choose to remain unbanked, they utilize an indigenous Nupe micro-finance system called Kpati (wooden lockboxes) and Dashi (communal market contributions) which they use to issue loans to their husbands which are paid back in raw cassava roots. •Patigi is home to the Lata Grazing Reserve. Which has a 21,000 hectares of land, it has been designated as a massive Special Livestock Processing Zone to transform Kwara State into the premier dairy and beef hub of North-Central Nigeria. •While many Nigerian communities have to stop farming during the blistering dry season, Patigi excels due to the Duku Irrigation Scheme. •Patigi is arguably the finest rice-growing hub in Kwara State, housing some of the largest lowlands (Fadamas) in the region. •Patigi farmers practice an ingenious zero-waste system after milling their rice. The massive mountains of leftover rice husks are repurposed by the community as rich, organic soil fertilizer, cheap cooking fuel for local bakers, or compressed feed for livestock •For history buffs, the sacred burial site of Etsu Jimade stands as an important, revered cultural landmark in the local government •While fading in modern times, older quarters in Patigi town still preserve ancient, hand-dug clay indigo dyeing pits which was massively used in the olden days •Deep within Patigi's forests lies a hidden sanctuary for thousands of migratory African riverbirds, strictly protected by local hunters and elders through ancient conservation taboos The absolute food of any Patigi household is locally grown swamp rice paired with a rich, red pepper stew. Masa is also a common food amongst them . Also they make a very unique swallow called Sinya (sweet potato swallow). If you ever witness “Patigi Regatta festival” a grand river competition featuring colorful royal boat races, traditional swimming contests, and aquatic displays that showcase centuries of Nupe maritime mastery. Last year when Olumide got admission to federal university, We ran from pillar to post before we could raise his tuition. He is a young brilliant boy with As in all his waec and close to 300 in jamb. We couldn't secure NELFUND then as a new student and mother asked him to withdraw. I has to beg here and other places for him to pay. As the 200 level comes, we quickly register for NELFUND to sort him out.. My boy messaged me last night about the verification of not only his tuition of #305,000 but with his 9 months upkeep of 20k per month.
