Carved from limestone, dating roughly to the 2nd–1st Century BC, from Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) and housed in the British Museum.

The stela features a 12-petalled rosette set inside a disk. Includes a crescent moon and a triangle below the rosette, along with circular motifs representing heavenly bodies. The central trapezoidal-shaped figure with outstretched arms and a disk/head represents the symbol of the Punic goddess Tanit. Flanking the central figure of Tanit are two stylized staff or caduceus symbols.
The 4-line Neo-Punic inscription near the base, recording a dedication (such as to Baal by Gaius Julius Arish, son of Adon-Baal).

Handmade pottery is one of the souvenirs that are available in North Africa. These at a market in Tunisia. I bought several items during my 20 years in the Mediterranean but had to always be extremely careful getting them home as they are quite fragile. Beautiful.

Nous n'avons aucune raison de regretter son abandon.
Inonder les chotts avec les eaux de la Méditerranée aurait profondément bouleversé les équilibres écologiques du Sud tunisien. Le Chott el-Jérid est un milieu naturel particulier, lié à l'équilibre hydrologique des oasis de Tozeur, de Nefta et du Nefzaoua.
L'introduction massive d'eau marine aurait également posé de sérieux problèmes de salinité d'évaporation et de préservation des ressources en eau douce.
Un tel aménagement aurait aussi transformé profondément la géographie du Sud et perturbé les communications terrestres entre les régions.
La Tunisie n'avait pas besoin de devenir un laboratoire d'expérimentation géographique pour satisfaire les ambitions d'ingénieurs français issus de la colonisation.
Notre patrimoine naturel et nos équilibres territoriaux méritent d'être préservés.
