What if protecting coral reefs from extreme heat started with giving them a little shade? #UMiami engineering students developed Kanopi, a floating, removable structure designed to shield vulnerable corals from harmful ultraviolet rays during the hottest months of the year.

Italy became a classroom for #UMiami biomedical engineering students. From surgical augmented reality glasses, humanoid robots, and tissue engineering research at Italian universities to touring a Pagani factory, students connected what they were learning about biomaterials to applications far beyond a traditional classroom. bit.ly/3UEDBNA

NEWS: Starting Fall 2026, I'm joining @umiamiengineer at the University of Miami as an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering!
I never thought I'd be a professor, so this one is especially exciting for me.
The web was built for humans clicking buttons. The next version will have agents acting for us. I want to study what trust means in that world. I'm also curious about the role open-source models and decentralized AI will play.
I'm starting a lab and recruiting students and postdocs. DMs are open!

A study published in @Biofabrication by researchers at Sylvester and @umiamiengineer features a tumor-on-a-chip model that reveals, in real time, how pancreatic tumors recruit immune cells to fuel their own growth. Learn more: spr.ly/6016BEBS0w.
“For the first time, we can watch pancreatic cancer rebuild its environment in real time,” said Dr. Ashutosh Agarwal, co-director of Engineering Cancer Cures™, associate professor of engineering at the University of Miami and senior author of the study.
The study uncovered a previously unknown population of cells that may serve as a therapeutic target, opening the door to strategies to disrupt the tumor's protective environment and make existing treatments more effective.
“If you want to treat the disease effectively, you have to understand how all of these components interact and reinforce each other,” said @DrJashDatta.

What if power outages could be predicted and prevented? A team of @umiamiengineer students partnered with @insideFPL to do just that.
The result: smarter, more targeted tree trimming that moves away from fixed maintenance cycles and toward real-time risk management for thousands of miles of Florida's power infrastructure.
