No Canadian should ever have to live in fear because of their faith. Today in Ottawa, I stood alongside members of Belleville’s Sons of Jacob Synagogue as they shared the lasting impact of a horrific antisemitic attack that could have ended in unimaginable tragedy. I am grateful for their willingness to speak openly and for the extraordinary bravery of Belleville Police Constables Jeff Smith and Michael McCurdy, whose actions helped prevent a far greater loss of life. What happened in Belleville is a sobering reminder that antisemitism is not a distant threat. It is present in our own communities, and its consequences are deeply felt. No congregation should have to endure such an attack to remind us of our responsibility to confront hatred, strengthen protections for vulnerable communities and defend the freedom to worship. To the members of Sons of Jacob, thank-you for your courage in sharing your experiences. Your voices must be heard, and your right to worship in peace must never be in question.
