I’ve been saying for more than three years that intraday reversal and mean-reversion strategies are structurally overrated. They don't work!
After running an extensive historical study on ES and SPY, the data supports that view: across most intraday conditions, mean reversion does not produce a consistent statistical edge.
Trend-following has a very different payoff distribution. You can take small losses on four out of five attempts and still remain profitable if the occasional sustained trend produces a sufficiently large asymmetric winner. The edge isn’t necessarily in the win rate; it’s in the expectancy and payoff distribution.
There is, however, one specific intraday window where our data shows a statistically meaningful mean-reversion edge. I’ll publish the setup, probabilities, and historical results shortly.

Horrible day to trade options. Only one hit its target; the rest were EOD executions, although many were in profit.
BTW, before you ask, I tested closing positions after 90 minutes to reduce theta decay for options, but there was no significant improvemnet statistically (only slightly for 0DTEs closer to EOD), so I let them run through EOD. All models were profitable. 💰
