We recently announced that Modal has crossed $1B in annualized run rate, as well as raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation. Our CEO and co-founder @bernhardsson stopped by @NYSE to share more about what's being built on Modal today and what's next for the company post-fundraise...

Tinker changed how people do post-training. We're big fans, and so are many of the teams we work with. But as those teams scale up, they keep raising the same two problems: per-token pricing gets expensive quickly, and you’re limited to the models and features the provider decides to support. We think a good API deserves more than one implementation. Today we're releasing Spindle, an open-source, Tinker-compatible training server that runs in your Modal workspace. Your existing Tinker scripts run unchanged, and because you own the server, you pay for GPU time instead of tokens.

Performant reinforcement learning is a hard infrastructure and research problem. We’ve recently made on-demand multi-node clusters available and showed how to take advantageous of heterogeneous sampling compute. But there still exists the need for high-fidelity environments, clear and robust reward functions, and tuned training recipes that actually work. Most teams are actually nearly there! With an agent harness deployed in production and evals/agent traces collected from that deployment, you just need an easy way to start training your data. So we built a training library that gives you the building blocks, tuned defaults, and observability you need for easy, production-grade LLM training. It’s available now. All it takes is a prompt.

I'm excited to welcome @cambridgemike as our VP of Engineering. Mike joins us after having spent 13 years at @X (Twitter) - where he already made hires using Juicebox! In the last 2 years of scaling our engineering team, we had three main learnings. 1/ Approach every problem from first principles 2/ Small, competent teams can drive outsized outcomes 3/ Great engineers understand product and business goals Mike embodies every single one of these. He is one of the clearest first-principles thinkers I've met. He has run remarkably lean teams at X (Twitter) responsible for some of the world's hardest product and infra challenges. And he did all of this in a high pressure environment that most companies will never see. Having built one of the world's most loved consumer apps, Mike also brings an exceptional level of product intuition. That's especially important as we build agents for a complex workflow like recruiting. Fun fact: he actually used Juicebox Agents to hire for his previous team :) Welcome to the team, Mike! Couldn't be more excited for this next phase of growth.

Common misconception! Modal's moat is actually a ditch around the perimeter of the office we have filled with sharp sticks. When someone else tries to build serverless infra, the ditch slows them down as we pour boiling pitch on their heads and set fire to their siege engines.
when you ask them what's your moat and they attack you with whatever this is

Today we're announcing that Modal has crossed $1B in annualized run rate, as well as raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, led by @Accel. Since our Series C, usage has tripled and we’ve grown more than 15x year-over-year. We are deeply grateful to the developers and companies building on Modal. There's still so much more to build, and we can't think of a better time to be building software.

Vera CPUs allow us to offer higher workload concurrency, without sacrificing throughput or latency. More juice per squeeze.

We raised $4.3M, led by @PanteraCapital Soon, there will be more agents than people online. Those agents will book flights, hire contractors, enrich customer data, conduct research, and complete transactions without a human in the loop. But today, agents are stuck with whatever tools they were originally given. The moment they need something new, they fail, hallucinate, or hand the problem back to a human. Orthogonal fixes this. Through a single integration, agents can discover the capabilities they need in the moment, orchestrate them, and pay for them instantly. An agent describes what it wants, and Orthogonal composes the result, calling the right services in the right order. Our goal is simple: when an agent needs a capability it doesn't already have, Orthogonal will be the first place it goes. Thanks to @PanteraCapital , @ycombinator, @pioneer_fund, @decasonic, Blast Club, Outbound Capital, Rice Capital (@taro_f), Surreal by Premise (@mercebent & @veelarco), Batch Ventures (CTO Fund), and our strategic investors for backing us. We're building the default front door for the internet.
