दुनिया के अलग-अलग देशों में और भारत में PYRE देखने के बाद कई फिल्मकारों ने मुझसे एक बात हमेशा कही..
“विनोद, इस फिल्म को बनाने के बाद अगर तुम्हारी मृत्यु भी हो जाए, तो तुम्हें कोई अफसोस नहीं होना चाहिए। तुमने एक ऐसी कृति बनाई है, जो असाधारण है। शायद तुम भी दोबारा ऐसी फिल्म न बना पाओ।”
पिछले चार साल से PYRE बनाने की मेरी यात्रा सचमुच चिता पर बैठने जैसी रही है। सर्वस्व न्योछावर करने के बाद, सब कुछ.. सब कुछ मतलब सब कुछ गंवाने के बाद…अब मेरी ये चिता आपके सामने है और अब मृत्यु भी हो जाए तो कोई मलाल नहीं रहेगा।
शायद आपको यकीन न हो, लेकिन ये सच है कि मेरी माँ के नाम पर बनी इस फिल्म कंपनी भागीरथी फिल्म्स प्राइवेट लिमिटेड, जिसके बैनर तले यह फिल्म बनी है, आज उसके खाते में सिर्फ़ ₹ 7,565 हैं और मेरे पास है तो बस यह फ़िल्म .. मेरी चिता.. #PYRE
चार साल की मेहनत.. तन-मन-धन से मुझ पर भरोसा करने वाले साथी.. मेरी टीम का विश्वास.. मेरा सब कुछ.. आपके सामने रख रहा हूँ।

When someone connects so deeply with Aama and Bubu’s story, and feels the loneliness, silence and pain beneath their love.. you know the film has travelled beyond the screen.

Devastated. That’s the word.
I watched @vinodkapri’s PYRE (चिता) and came out carrying a strange silence within me.
Set in the Himalayas, it is a love story of an ageing couple but beneath it lies something much deeper: love, loneliness, migration, memory, and the cruelty of time.
The casting is extraordinary. Two real people, both 80+, from Kumaon, surrounded by local villagers. No performance. Just life unfolding in front of the camera.
The monsoon-soaked mountains, the cinematography and the haunting soundscape make you feel as if you are there, beautiful, isolated and unbearably lonely.
If you have ageing parents, or have ever understood what migration does to families, carry a box of tissues.
Some films end when the credits roll. Pyre came back with me. To haunt me.
Brilliant. Must watch.

Before the screening of PYRE (चिता), when legendary actor Naseer sahab and Ratna ji met our Aama and Bubu, they said:
“We cannot do the kind of acting that you two have done.”
What makes this moment even more special is that Naseer sahab and Ratna ji were originally supposed to play Aama and Bubu. Naseer sahab had loved the story from the very beginning and then life brought me to Padam Singh ji and Hira Devi ji .. two non actors from the mountains who had never faced a camera before.
Watching them meet was truly an unforgettable moment. ❤️

It’s truly sad to learn about Asha Tai’s passing… her voice has been one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate world over for centuries to come.
