Manchester United v Bournemouth One club had more: Revenue Wages EBITDA profit Amortisation Player purchases Player sales Expensive squad …and lost 3-0 to a team that played on Thursday night. We say in management school that culture trumps strategy. If your culture is everyone buying into the same ideas and working together then that always has a good chance to punch above your weight against an ownership that rules by bullying and bigotry. Well done AFCB Figures per @valuball

Man Utd have picked up just 7 points from a possible 21 to start the 2026/27 season, but their struggles are nothing new. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Manchester United have been one of the Premier League’s worst-performing clubs relative to the money invested in their squad. Valuball Cost vs Performance analysis ranks United 34th out of 35 clubs since 2013/14. Only QPR rank worse, and they spent just ONE season in the Premier League during that period. Liverpool are included for comparison, sitting at the complete opposite end of the spectrum!

Valuballs performance score takes results across all competitions to produce a single comparative measure of performance relative to squad cost. Even when looking purely at wages + amortisation against Premier League points, the same pattern emerges. Manchester United have been consistently underachieving relative to their financial resources for over a decade now.

Was Martinez right to have a pop at the suits at Old Trafford last night? Since the arrival of INEOS we now have a club that: ⚽️Rinses the fans for more money ⚽️Reduced average first team weekly wage by £50k ⚽️Sacked the tea ladies ⚽️Made a loss every year ⚽️Spent over £1bn on players ⚽️Increased the club debts

We've added a new feature to @valuball so you can now do a head to head financial comparison for clubs. Downside as always is that the accounts are usually 2024/25 at this time of the year. 12:30 kick off

Manchester United time adjusted record purchases and sales per @valuball. To paraphrase The Smiths “Some deals are better than others” I suspect that most United fans would think that @rioferdy5 is well worth it, not the same about all rhetorical remainder in the top 10.

If City went down what would it mean from a squad perspective? Could they keep their current squad? Would they comply with the new EFL rules? Could they keep their entire team as is? Could City loan out Haaland for a season and keep him? Another deep dive analysis helping us understand this potential scenario from the numbers side. valuball.co/blogs/man-city-r…

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good. As promised I’ve given the appearance fees* (and a top up from my PoF account) for talking Manchester City x 114 to @samaritans. Men in particular are hopeless at looking after what’s going on in their heads. In the words of The Rifles song “and I smile when you’re there and I cry when I’m all alone”. Samaritans are there for you in those moments. *Most don’t pay anything BTW.
