RIP Sir David Cox 😢 An incredible giant whose contributions are inversely related to his modesty. Last time I saw him, he had just turned 94 on which I congratulated him. “Nothing special, it isn’t a prime number”, he replied. I’m glad he lived to 97 which is, indeed, prime.

There is a rise in hospitalization (including ICU) due to the Omicron surge, but this is nowhere near what we would have seen with similar numbers of Delta. Mass vaccination & a less virulent variant are helping. Still have to keep a close watch on healthcare capacity...
December 30 - Critical Care Services Ontario is reporting 196 adult patients w/ #COVID related critical illness (CRCI) in ICUs. 104 CRCI patients were ventilated. There were 27 new adult admissions. The 7-day rolling avg. of CRCI patients in ICU is 176. #onpoli #onhealth

In this cohort study, an increased platelet count was associated with an increased risk of cancer for at least 2 years. The results suggest that individuals with unexplained thrombocytosis should be offered screening for several cancers. ja.ma/3fWlbAO
This study suggests that tumor size and grade is associated with long-term survival, and patients with larger tumors, lower tumor grades, and progesterone receptor–positive status experienced significant treatment benefit with receipt of tamoxifen therapy. ja.ma/3x2KeZz

1/ We've just confirmed the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine outside of randomized trials. Details @NEJM: nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE… Yes, great news, but let's talk about methodological issues that arise when using #observational data to estimate vaccine effectiveness.
