Opal, the company famous for making a fancy webcam, has pivoted to making other consumer electronics. Fueled by big investments from OpenAI and Samsung, it’s working on an audio gadget first. wired.com/story/opal-electro…

Remember the *abrupt* shift to remote work in 2020? Frustrated by subpar webcams, founder @veeraj ventured into creating a high-end webcam that could offer 4K video and noise reduction— a necessity in the era of daily Zoom meetings.

I got one of those rad little @opalelectronics tadpole webcams while on parental leave and damn is it useful for taking calls on the couch without looking like a potato. Also it’s cute as heck 🤩

Shoutout to the Opal team for hooking up the Tadpole portable webcam. Super easy to use and I look great in Zoom meetings (where I show up for 3 minutes, tell an unfunny joke and leave).

Update: two weeks into my @opalelectronics Tadpole and I can't imagine taking a call without it! For anyone who takes all their calls hunched over a laptop... highly recommend 🎯
been an @opalelectronics fan for a while now. As a laptop-only user most days, I’m excited to give Tadpole, their new portable model, a try! Thank you @veeraj and team 👩‍💻

The Opal Tadpole from @opalelectronics is a really neat webcam for laptops that is small, high quality, and convenient to use. ✅ 48 MP Sony IMX582 sensor, Aperture F/1.8, 6 element lens. ✅ 4K video recording. ✅ It has a braided cable that looks and feels great, and it can act as a lanyard. ✅ VisiMic microphone --> "directional mic with AI noise isolation". ✅ "Tap to mute” feature that works just like what the name describes, you can tap the USB-C plug to mute/unmute the mic. ✅ All in a very portable body, with 45 grams of weight. I compared the video quality with my Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i's built-in webcam, and I found that the video quality from the Tadpole is just that much better. All for $175, which is a much better pricing than the previous Opal C1 (but with better features).

i personally don't care about my webcam quality, but this is a surprisingly elegant solution for the iPad's less than ideal camera position for FaceTime. the cable is nice/short, and it clips on just fine. didn't think i'd like this thing but i totally see the use case for it here.
