in 1973 a broke guy opened a bar under a flophouse on new york's skid row and made one rule: bands could only play their own songs that rule is how punk started he named it cbgb, for country, bluegrass and blues. none of that music ever showed up. the rule was about money: covers meant royalties he couldn't pay so the bands nobody else would book came. the ramones debuted there in august 1974 and played the room 70+ times that year. blondie showed up around the same time in 1975 three art students played their first show ever there, opening for the ramones. the co-founder of sire records came in to see the ramones, heard the openers, and signed them too. that was talking heads 3,300 square feet, graffiti on every wall, the most infamous bathroom in new york then the bowery got expensive. in 2006 cbgb lost its lease, and patti smith played the last show, 31 years after her first one there where's the cbgb of new york right now?
