I don't think chemistry is a good argument against ships one doesn't like. It's clearly subjective as proved by how you will get different answers depending on who you ask. The chemistry fans talk about is between them and the ship rather than the characters.

So as an argument it kinda goes nowhere because one fan says they feel an incredible chemistry while another says they don't feel any, and clearly neither is lying about their own feelings. And the only one that could speak FOR the character would be the author/creator

And we know that doesn't amount to much when it comes to shipping, unless you're specifically referring to canon only. So yeah, chemistry when talking about fictional ships is just personal preference. There's no right or wrong answer, it's subjective and personal
