Every Diwali's top earner since 1995, with its IMDb rating. How many of the recent ones do you remember?
Diwali used to belong to one star.
Shah Rukh Khan led 10 Diwali releases up to 2014, including DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Om Shanti Om. None since. Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar took the date, with franchises.
Studios kept piling onto Diwali anyway, and fewer of the films worked. In the late 90s, 63% of Diwali films with a box office verdict were hits. Since 2016, 28%.
Not only the box office numbers but the films got worse too. The biggest Diwali film of each year averaged 6.6 on IMDb up to 2007. Since 2008, 5.5.
Lots of buzz on X today about Ramayana's numbers. But Diwali stopped pulling people into theatres a long time ago. In the late 90s, Diwali films sold 5.2 crore tickets a year. Since 2021, 1.6 crore. We looked at every Diwali release since 1995 🧵

For a long time, the big IT companies were where a lot of young people in India got their first job. The trend seems to have slowed down while the delivery apps are growing rapidly.
Side note: Correlation is not causation, this visual doesn't imply that people are leaving IT jobs to become delivery riders, or that slower IT hiring is pushing people into delivery work.
Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit each have more active riders now than employees in TCS and the trend is growing 🧵
