The pope really just said
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Rabies kills ~59,000 people a year globally. At that rate, the United States should lose 2,500 people a year to rabies. But the real number is fewer than 10, partly because we've spent 30 years dropping fish-flavored ravioli out of helicopters over the Appalachians.
Each one contains a rabies vaccine inside a fishmeal-coated block. Raccoons, foxes, coyotes and skunks find them by smell, bite through, and enjoy the treat. Four to six weeks later, they carry rabies antibodies. Enough of them in one area and the virus runs out of animals to move through.
USDA Wildlife Services has been doing this this line since 1995. It runs roughly from Maine down through Alabama, and its job is to stop raccoon-variant rabies from crossing into the central US, where it has never established.
A single course of post-exposure shots runs into the thousands of dollars, and every rabid raccoon in a suburb produces a cluster of them: the kid who got scratched, the dog that tangled with it, etc. US rabies prevention costs between $245 and $510 million a year and avoids over a billion in medical spending.
Long Island is probably our best case study for this program. A $2.6 million baiting program eliminated raccoon rabies from the zone, and paid for itself in eight years on avoided shots and testing alone.
The biggest question I hear about this is: what happens if my dog finds one? And the answer: nothing bad. This vaccine has been safety-tested in over 60 species at varying doses with no adverse reactions observed, regardless of how much was given.
About 250 million doses have been distributed worldwide since 1987 with no documented deaths in wildlife or domestic animals. The most severe adverse reaction observed was upset stomach.

Women, the reason you can have a credit card in your own name and donβt need a manβs signature to open a bank account is because of Gloria Steinem. RIP to this queen.

These two defense gems by Stott in the 9th legitimately saved the gameβ¦
I sound like a broken record at this point, but I truly just cannot get over how freakishly good he is defensively. Just an unbelievable talent. Stick him anywhere & heβs nasty. Wow.
The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and theyβll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts.
What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong. I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis. π¦
I will always love her and want to make her proud. My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. Weβre in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things. π @dollyparton

Today 8/17/1957, Richie Ashburn of the Phillies hit a foul ball that struck fan Alice Roth, breaking her nose. Medics placed her on a stretcher.
Ashburn fouled off the next pitch. That ball also hit Alice as she was being carried away, breaking a bone in her knee.

"The "Philadelphia Inquirer" found dangerous chemicals in the astroturf of the now-demolished Veterans Stadium.
Six Phillies who played on that turf, Tug McGraw, Darren Daulton, John Vukovich, John Oates, Ken Brett, and David West have died of a rare and aggressive brain cancer. The six players all died in their 40's or 50's, roughly three times the rate of the average adult population.
Even more alarming was their mutual diagnosis of glioblastoma.
The Phillies sold pieces of turf in sealed 4 x 4" bags.
The "Inquirer" purchased four of those on eBay.
Samples analyzed by two separate labs found 16 types of dangerous chemicals in the turf.
They are referred to as βforever chemicalsβ because they donβt break down and can last in the human body for years.
The US federal government estimates that 12,000 artificial turf fields containing PFAS or βforever chemicalsβ exist in USA.

Underrated truth: No matter where you are in life, there is still so much to look forward to. People you havenβt met. Places you havenβt seen. Ideas you havenβt discovered. Versions of yourself you havenβt become. Believe the world has more in store for you, and it will.
