Many are calling the decision suspicious. wlrn.us/3h9nPXn

In a 4-1 vote, with Russell in opposed, the Miami City Commission votes to name itself the new board for the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust, with Christine King as chair, and she gets to appoint 2 more members to make a 7-member board. They ousted the current board.

No apology made and no discussion of the dozens of comments from community members against the item.

The word "malfeasance" was not in the audit, and there was no suggestion that there were financial improprieties. The Trust's current chair, Patrick Range, asked the commission this morning for an apology for the suggestion there was malfeasance.

That's it: the commission votes 4-1 to take over the Virginia Key Beach Park Advisory Board. Ken Russell is the sole dissenting vote, says he wanted to be able to appoint someone to the board who knows the issues better than him.

Overt political retaliation from the corrupt 🤡s on the @CityofMiami commission. It's a story we've sadly seen play out before with retaliation against @vkocfl and @BallAndChainBar. Unreal that they keep getting elected and getting away with it.

In the months after the Trust leadership criticized a proposal to create a homeless encampment on Vga Key, commissioners Joe Carollo and Alex Diaz de la Portilla started referencing a then-unfinished audit using the word "malfeasance" and suggesting financial improprieties.

My kids went to camp there and it had a positive affect on them, especially my oldest daughter. We spend a lot of time there as a family. Taking this away will be devastating to families and homeless people will not be helped from that location.

All of those who have spoken on VK have asked the city to reopen the @vkocfl. Several parents here say their children have become environmentalists because they went to camp there.
