Breaking: our new investigation reveals a major shift in the funding of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), one of the deadliest armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ADF previously relied on external financing support from ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Now the ADF has become self-reliant, supplying most of their own financing through proceeds from conflict gold, cocoa production, racketeering, and kidnapping for ransom. The investigation draws on more than 100 interviews with miners, traders, transporters, smugglers, financiers, armed-group collaborators, former hostages, security officials, government representatives, civil society actors, researchers, and international experts. The UN Security Council, United States, United Kingdom, and European Union should investigate and sanction conflict gold supply chains that link the ADF to Ugandan trading, refining, and export networks. When community members in Siaya rejected Shanta Gold's land acquisition, state security stepped in. Local activist Silas Omondi was arrested at gunpoint, paraded on DCI social media, and had his phones seized, with court orders to return it ignored. Was the police doing their job or we're they weaponized to silence committee members genuinely opposing land consents? Watch #LandGoldandPower.

The EU’s sanctions envoy said alumina from Ireland’s Aughinish refinery is reaching Russia’s military-industrial complex and something should be done about that. The statement adds pressure on Brussels to close a loophole that allows the material to be exported despite its use in the supply chains of Russian weapons makers. buff.ly/CDqNvlY

After acquiring exploration rights in Siaya for $14.5 million, Shanta Gold was delisted from the London Stock Exchange. Ownership was transferred to Mauritius registered entities, removing mandatory ongoing public reporting obligations. This offshore restructuring has left local communities in gold rich Ramula with little public financial scrutiny and visibility into the true value extracted from their land. 📺 Watch #LandGoldandPower on YouTube.
