This is the unsung beauty and wealth of startup Europe – and exactly what we are putting at risk by attempting brute-force king-making, i.e. putting all our eggs in the single basket of a few late-stage megafunds & companies.

Shame on the Greek govt. Wtf?
A total farce. I am deeply ashamed of Greece for being one of the EU countries blocking this.

🚨 BREAKING: EU countries have dropped the idea of offering Canada "associate member" status in the 27-member bloc, opting instead for softer language promising "ever closer association," according to a draft statement, seen by POLITICO. Full story: vist.ly/5qd4s

I had no plans for tonight, but it turns out I'll be upgrading @scottyterm to the latest ghosttylib. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited! 🎉
Ghostty 1.4 is now out! Full Kitty graphics with animation (the first terminal besides Kitty to do it), scrollback compression for much lower memory usage, macOS 27 support, a new OpenGL renderer on Linux, ghostty +ssh, big performance gains, and hundreds more changes. The highlights: - Scrollback compression: scrollback compresses ~90+% on average, meaning your terminals use that much less live memory - Huge memory savings across the board: no single large thing, just lots of good improvements lowers memory usage everywhere, netting anywhere from 50 to 90% less memory usage depending on workload - Kitty graphics is now 100% complete, including animation and relative placements, after a full conformance pass against the spec and Kitty itself - The Kitty clipboard protocol, with an image preview when a program asks to read your clipboard - Split drag and drop on Linux, including between windows - ghostty +ssh installs terminfo on remote hosts automatically, so things just work over SSH - Lots of terminal emulation accuracy fixes This release is 7 months of work from 172 contributors over 2,889 commits. It also fixes 10 security advisories, so please update. Full release notes: ghostty.org/docs/install/rel…

Fun fact: App-agnostic links are possible! apron.chat has defines a scheme (apron:) and a neutral URL prefix (link.apron.chat) which apps "register" with their OS to capture. I can post a link from one client, and you can open it on a different client.

Oh FFS. Thank you for your concern Sam, but don’t spread your FUD and doom bait in my waters. I lead one of the most utilized Linux operating systems in the world for data centers and enterprises, and I founded its predecessor too. While AI is surely accelerating finding human created security issues, it is a temporary problem, and most open source project leads have already figured out how to also use AI to reduce new bugs moving forward. Here is a graph from GKH (who maintains the stable kernel) on how many CVEs they are remediating per release: github.com/gregkh/kernel-dev… This graph describes how much better each release is now getting: github.com/gregkh/kernel-dev… This doom based marketing approach that the AI labs are pushing is really short sighted. While this will of course drive business to us, I find it unethical to distort the truth and use scare tactics in messaging. The greater truth is that AI is making the software industry more secure, by identifying the human errors in code, and soon we will end up in a much better place.
🚨Sam Altman says the internet can no longer be SECURED by patching bugs. "I no longer think we're going to be able to just patch all the bugs," the OpenAI CEO said, warning smarter models can find "hardware level insane stuff." He says OpenAI can't responsibly open source its best model "anytime soon," but the open source world isn't far behind: "Not super."

I find consoles a really neat feature. The interface exposed is a TTY, not a pipe, which means you will get colors and spinners, and all the cool stuff many modern CLI tools use.
Consoles are special TTYs where command output can be redirected. Just send your build logs to a console terminal and keep your working terminal clean. Scroll back to see history, close it when you no longer need it.

US energy company execs have resigned in disgust as the Trump family is caught secretly expediting the funneling of $25 billion from a sanctioned Russian energy giant in exchange for allowing Russians to obtain a natural gas project in Alaska. According to investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times, Russia's Novatek allegedly concealed its financial involvement in the American project through a UAE-linked intermediary. Gentry Beach, a longtime Trump ally and close friend of Donald Trump Jr., signed an agreement with Novatek to pursue natural gas development in Alaska. Reuters documented the arrangement in February. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin discussed this cooperation on the Alaska energy project with Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The controversy deepened when Polar Train LNG's CEO, Joel Riddle, raised concerns about concealed Russian financing and possible sanctions violations. He departed in September, followed by other senior executives. The Financial Times also described discussions about a potential arrangement under which Novatek would provide technology for the Alaska project in exchange for sanctions relief benefiting its Arctic LNG 2 development in Siberia. According to The New York Times, Riddle and two other departing executives warned the Trump administration about the Russian financing and urged officials to investigate. The White House maintains that the project was mentioned only briefly and that no detailed discussions took place. There is no established evidence that Kushner or Witkoff knew about the allegedly concealed financing. Polar Train LNG denies wrongdoing. The central question is how a sanctioned Russian energy company became involved in a major American energy venture while Putin was discussing potential economic cooperation with Trump's representatives and a longtime Trump family associate was pursuing a separate agreement with the same Russian company. Selling Alaska to the Russians or selling Ukraine to the Russians - to the Trump family it's all the same. ft.com/content/e9cfbfbb-e65a…

Charles Kushner, Jared’s father, pleaded guilty to 18 counts, including tax evasion and witness tampering. He hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, filmed it, and sent the tape to his sister. The scandal tarnished the Kushner real estate brand. Trump later pardoned him and made him ambassador to France and Monaco. Watching your dad commit tax fraud and intimidate witnesses must be quite a masterclass in business ethics. No wonder Jared Kushner went from the White House to securing $2 billion in Saudi backing for his investment firm. When corruption is the family business, the apple doesn’t just fall close to the tree; it buys the whole orchard.

Trump’s oil deal with Venezuela was negotiated in secret. Now we know why. The contract just leaked, and it doesn’t say what Trump says it says.  What it does say is that we bought 35 percent of a company for a penny a share. The company is run by Alejandro Betancourt, a Venezuelan businessman who’s been investigated for money laundering in Switzerland, Spain, and the United States. DOJ officials reportedly asked foreign governments to close those investigations and let him travel. The parent company is registered through a Barbados shell, so nobody can see who the other owners are. Any dispute goes to a court in Texas. One person involved said it was built to insulate the deal from future administrations. The company pumps about 200,000 barrels a day. America burns through that in 15 minutes. If this were a good deal, they wouldn’t have had to hide it. I break it all down in today’s show (link in reply).

Most terminals force you to split the current pane when you open something new. That quickly turns the window into a grid of tiny unreadable areas. Scotty adds the new terminal to the right of the current one instead.

You people hate gays. And you hate trans people. You legislatively gay bash us at every opportunity. You bash us in your campaigns. You suck up to people who hate us and want to take away our rights. And then you turn around and welcome us as long as we’re in the closet and go along with your hateful agenda. Yeah you’re real paragons of civil rights. Oh and PS, the allegation isn’t that he was gay, the allegation is that he paid underage minors for sex. Last time I checked, we all agreed that was a bad thing. But I guess you guys have come a long way under Trump, haven’t you?
Not a single Republican is surprised to learn Lindsay Graham was gay. Not one. But I want to thank Democrats for showing how scummy they are. I thought being gay was a good thing. We have an entire month celebrating it. And Graham is dead, so he can't defend himself.
