"Hoosegow" is actually pretty close to how "juzgado" sounds in colloquial Spanish today. In Spain, I mean. All the -ado endings turn more or less into -au.
They wanted to say 'load' as in 'load a save game', but ended up saying 'load' as in 'weight'.
Context matters for languages. If you look up isolated words in a dictionary, you get these things.

One of my favourite etymologies. Probably the only Gaulish word in English.

Diesen Zettel hat der Schneider in meiner Jacke vergessen.
Der 2. Satz lautet beeile dich, aber was bedeutet der erste?
The German language has causative verbs for this:
trinken - to drink
tränken - to supply drink, to make [usually an animal] drink
Best way to get the pronunciation right: Exaggerate at first.
This goes for singing, too, by the way. Parody the sound of an opera singer.
So that's why the scammers in Twitter DMs tryto get you to add them on Telegram lately.
someone can hack your phone by sending you a telegram sticker and you don’t even have to open it
a security researcher just showed that telegram’s animated stickers have a zero-click vulnerability rated 9.8 out of 10, that’s almost as critical as it gets
you receive the sticker, telegram automatically processes it to show you a preview, and that’s it.
code runs on your phone, no tap needed, no link clicked, nothing
the worst part? telegram is saying the bug doesn’t exist. they claim their servers validate every sticker so this is “technically impossible.”
meanwhile the researcher presented proof at a security conference in tokyo and the flawed code is still live in the app
there’s no patch. the vulnerability was reported months ago and telegram hasn’t fixed it
go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Messages and restrict who can message you. right now that’s the only thing between you and a sticker that owns your phone
the app 300 million crypto users trust with their group chats doesn’t even acknowledge the door is open
Is there a reading app for Ancient Greek where you can import a book (as PDF, for example) and then tap any unknown words to see the translation?
LingQ has Latin, but sadly no Ancient Greek.

German just says what it sees:
glove: Handschuh (hand shoe)
turtle: Schildkröte (shield toad)
sloth: Faultier (lazy animal)
skunk: Stinktier (stink animal)
fridge: Kühlschrank (cool cupboard)
Now you know five German nouns. Their genders are another story.
One language lesson does already something. You'll already know a few words. Next week you'll understand a sentence.
Five hundred of them and you're fluent in a different language.
Nobody gets to skip to 500.

If you're learning Ancient Greek, here's a valuable new resource!
Happy to announce I built a Greek/English reader site with all the surviving plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, & Aristophanes.
Multiple translations for each play; click to parse & define for any Greek word; full Greek & English search.

There's this 1988 book, "The Lexicon of Intentionally Ambiguous Recommendations", full of lines like
- I can't recommend him highly enough
- I most enthusiastically recommend this man with no qualifications whatsoever
- You'll be lucky to get him to work for you
- No person would be better for the job
and
- I am pleased to say that this candidate is a former colleague of mine

no offense but reading is literally the cure to brain rot and there’s no work around to reading books
