Rays OF defensive philosophy is to run first and adjust later - and it works. I wrote about this earlier in the year but didn't think to borrow this graph from Savant. Corey Dickerson used the same philosophy to transform himself from DH to Gold Glover draysbay.com/tampa-bay-rays-…

The key takeaway here is not that the catcher converted a ball into a strike. It’s how long he keeps his target up for the pitcher & the late glove load. The late load with no stall at the bottom forces him into a high speed smooth one piece move.

🚨 Bobby Witt Jr's On-Deck Routine
• Lock in on the pitcher.
• Time up your stride.
• Visualize what you just saw w/ a swing.
⭐️ Your focus (or lack of it) on-deck is a difference-maker. Get into the box ready to compete.

AUSTIN HEDGES, CLE - This isn't just another session of sitting behind a machine and catching balls —it's a masterclass in pushing the limits.
People watching might not fully grasp just how fast this move is; it's high velocity on another level! He might miss one, but that's not the point. The key is his mindset: constantly looking for ways to move even faster.
The takeaway here is to embrace failure. Don't get down on yourself. Stretch your limits and find out what you're truly capable of.

Building upon my recent discussion of catcher maturation and skill refinement, we now turn our attention to the impressive evolution of Jake Rogers, a Gold Glove finalist in 2024. The visual difference between his college days at Tulane and his present form is striking.
Rogers credits his significant development to the guidance of Tigers catching coach Ryan Sienko (@Catch_and_Throw ) during his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery in 2022. (Jake Rogers: Tell Me Everything | Have a Seat, on YouTube 25:35)
While this is purely my observation, lacking any direct conversation with Sinks, my analysis suggests Rogers focused considerably on improving his setups, pre-pitch move (length at which he held it) and mitt depth, and his extension after the catch.
As highlighted towards the end of the video, the enhanced vertical movement in Rogers' finishing technique is clearly noticeable.

Environment design:
Smash balls➡️Oppo Angle➡️Offset open ➡️Short bat ➡️Line drives middle of the field
➡️Smash Balls: Contact quality feedback
➡️Oppo angle: Barrel depth/direction
➡️Offset open: Patterning the load (Hinge/Coil)
➡️Short bat: Back up point of contact, forces you to turn tight to the body and maintain posture
Simple environment to work on contact quality at different depths of contact. Great for hitters who struggle working behind the baseball and maintaining posture throughout rotation.

“For me framing is catching balls in the right position, a strong position…
I did a lot of RESEARCH! The pitches catchers miss the most are misfires.”

A couple keys on the *press* glove action when dealing with the extremely tough short in between hop that often eats infielders up…
Dirt Bro instructor, Taber Mongero, explains the common flaw of wasted time/space when using the press glove action, and how it should be eliminated. Following this explanation, you can see Taber execute the press glove action at game speed on a play where it was extremely necessary.
The reason why he is using the press glove action on this play is to turn a tricky short in between hop into a much more manageable short hop by pressing forward through the ball before bringing the ball back to his mid line center line and throwing to first for the out. #DoingDirtWork – at United States
