This has genuinely made me fear ever visiting America. I know I would be in a constant state of anxiety about tipping, tinged with an element of resentment. When I travel I always tip when it’s warranted, and generously. But the whole compulsory tipping thing 🙂↔️

It is sometimes stated that William Walker Atkinson (aka "Three Initiates") derived his "Seven Principles" in The Kybalion (1908) from an 1885 translation and commentary on Hermetic tracts, The Virgin of the World by Anna Kingsford and Edward Maitland (whose English translation is adapted from an 1866/67 French compendium by classicist Louis Ménard).
This analysis first appeared in a 2009 blog article by esoteric scholar Mary K. Greer ("Source of The Kybalion in Anna Kingsford’s Hermetic System") and later in a 2018 introduction to The Kybalion that I commissioned from my friend and source of literary inspiration, Richard Smoley.
Having compared Greer’s and Smoley’s comparisons—which variously correspond to and depart from one another—to Kingsford and Maitland's book, I find the evidence tangential—not necessarily thin but incomplete—that Atkinson devised (or in the overly determined phrasing of an online commentator “plagiarized”) his seven principles from The Virgin of the World.
The Kybalion has passed through two stages of disdain in our generation. The first is that it is fake Hermeticism. This is overwrought. It is a modern novelty—in my estimation a meaningful novelty with insights into Hermetic themes and a canny analysis of New Thought and its physical limits.
The second and more recent disdain results from commenters reading one another versus reading the book, and hence arriving at semi-bizarre political claims suggested nowhere in the century-old text.
Ad fontes.
Controversial take: I don’t think there should be nuts in fruit cakes. I curse this weird modern mania for insisting on different textures in the same dish. I like gluggy all on its own

British children's literature often starts a story with a group of siblings going on holiday. Their walks & summer leisure start a process of discovery to magic landscapes. It is a distinct genre linked to national culture. #ChildrensLit #FolkloreSunday
Reading Blake is still as challenging and perplexing after 40 years 😆 At the moment it means visionary faculty over external systems. Jerusalem is the map of that trust, following the golden string of Imagination until Heaven’s Gate is built again

I'll be making a rare LA appearance next month for the premier of The Bishop of Hollywood, about the remarkable Stephan Hoeller, and also giving a talk at the PRS library. eventbrite.com/e/the-bishop-… and eventbrite.com/e/imagination…
The English lyric has always been good at holding contradiction: beauty and suffering in the same line, wonder without denial. Poetry as a portable practice of compassion
Recite a simple gatha with the breath:
Breathing in: “I have arrived, I am home.”
Breathing out: “In the here, in the now.”
“I am solid… I am free.”
These words are not thinking — they are anchors that help the mind return to the body.
And full credit to Thich Nhat Hanh 🙂

Nothing here exists entirely on its own.
Even this quiet morning cup of tea arrives through soil, rain, the hands of my beautifully kind and generous partner and time. I’m trying to notice these quiet and often silent exchanges more carefully
