Procrastination is a peculiar tyranny, for it is perhaps the only prison in which man willingly turns the key upon himself. He speaks of tomorrow as though it were a kingdom promised to him, forgetting that tomorrow is merely a possibility, while today is the only possession he truly holds. Time does not bargain with hesitation, nor does the universe suspend its motion for the comfort of an uncertain mind. The stars continue their course, the seasons fulfill their duties, and the earth turns without awaiting permission. Yet man, gifted with reason and the power to shape his own destiny, allows the smallest discomfort to persuade him into stillness. What a strange contradiction, that one should fear the labor required to build a life, yet remain unafraid of wasting the life itself. Consider then, that the greatest obstacle before a man is seldom the difficulty of his undertaking, but the authority he has granted his own reluctance. For action does not require the absence of fear, nor does progress demand the arrival of inspiration. A man who waits until his spirit is perfectly prepared may find that his entire existence has passed in preparation. Greatness is not bestowed upon those who merely contemplate what might be accomplished, but upon those who dare to disturb the silence of their intentions with action. Let not the passing moods of the mind govern the permanent ambitions of the soul. For he who masters his moments shall, in time, master his days; and he who masters his days may yet discover that destiny was never a matter of fortune, but of what he chose to do while time was still his own.
