Hackers ripped down a Flock camera above a roadway, made a near-complete copy of the data it stored inside, and shared the files with 404 Media and Wired

A Flock Safety license-plate reader pulled from a public roadway and examined jointly by 404 Media and WIRED on September 16, 2026, showed on-device software that detects vehicles, plates, bicycles and people, records where a person sits in the frame, and attaches a confidence score.
A typical passing car generated about 28 photographs and some produced more than 100; cropped images were sent to the company over cellular links while plate reading itself appeared to occur on Flock servers.
The company says the cameras do not perform facial recognition, yet the same files contained an encryption key stored in the clear on an unencrypted “media” partition.
That key unlocked video of thousands of detections. Twenty-one days of logs captured roughly 50,200 vehicles and 1.6 million images.
Detectors also treated bumper stickers and, in one test, an American-flag patch as if they were license plates.
Flock markets the cameras as on-device encrypted crime-fighting tools that cities can share across a growing network.
Separate August 2026 WIRED reporting described the company’s OS Investigate software linking camera records with police files and commercial data.
Person detection is documented even if face identification is not.
Each additional pole adds another local copy of the same store sitting over public roads.
Drivers and cyclists have no way to opt out of streets they already use, and no federal automatic license-plate reader statute governs the hardware.

As we approach the 84th Anniversary of the Massacre of the Australian Army Nursing Service Sisters who were murdered on Radji Beach, Bangka Island, 16 February 1942.
I would like to draw your attention to their individual stories.
For each of the nurses, a short biography has been added to the @CWGC For Evermore story portal.
I was so deeply moved nay, shocked by the Radji Beach, Bangka Island Massacre and what these women endured.
Please do look on Facebook at Muntok Nurses Page, they are based in Australia and have been commemorating the events each year since 1945.
When I added their stories on the anniversary of the massacre in February last year, I was surprised that so few UK citizens were aware of the horrific atrocities committed against the women.
They were all raped before they were forced to walk into the water.
They linked arms, they died together.
There was one survivor.
Post wartime sentiment meant that the true extent of the depravity and violence they were subjected to, was not immediately reported. But, we have witnessed sex crimes as a weapon of war , right up to recent years. It doesn’t make the tragedy easier to bear.
But please do be advised that caution is probably best applied if using the history of these women as a research tool for young people under 16.
