At Off-By-One, security researcher and Microsoft Most Valuable Researcher Edward Z. Peng (@edwardzpeng) delivered the keynote, A Year of Hacking with LLMs, reflecting on a year of hands-on experimentation with AI and its growing impact on security research.
Drawing from real-world experience, Edward discussed how large language models are changing the way researchers approach vulnerability discovery, reverse engineering, exploit development, and research workflows. He discussed both the promise and the limitations of these tools, emphasizing that while AI can accelerate analysis and augment research, curiosity, technical expertise, and sound judgment remain essential.
Edward closed with four key takeaways for security researchers navigating a rapidly changing landscape:
• Keep learning as technology evolves.
• Stay curious and maintain your passion for research.
• Do the right thing and take responsibility for the outcomes of your work.
• Actively embrace change rather than resist it.
Thank you, Edward, for sharing your insights and challenging the community to think critically about the future of AI-assisted security research.
