There is a culture in film that encourages the very macho attitude of “that’s just how we do things” which is inherently anti-art — we should be striving to improve and reimagine how things are done at every level.

Never forget the Pepsi rebrand Arnell did
The National Design Studio team continues to grow here at the White House. It’s my pleasure to welcome Peter Arnell to @NDStudio 🇺🇸 Peter Arnell has been appointed Chief Brand Architect of the United States of America — the first person to serve in this role. Peter will help advance President Trump’s Executive Order 14338: “Improving Our Nation Through Better Design.” With more than four decades of experience shaping some of the world’s most influential consumer experiences and brands, Peter will help define and unify how the United States expresses itself — aligning national identity, design systems, communications, and citizen user experience into one coherent whole for the American people. See more from our conversation at the WSJ Future of Everything conference. Make America Beautiful Again! 🇺🇸 wsj.com/video/redesigning-am…

btw both are true (nuance is crazy I know) access to arts funding does not = sustainability but it is undoubtedly a privilege
'Blue Heron' is the most acclaimed film of 2026, and director Sophy Romvari says its existence can be credited to grants provided by the Canadian government at both the script and production stages. “I really did make exactly the movie I wanted to make.... When I started making work in Canada, I was not aware of the privilege of living in a country that has access to arts funding. The version of this film that I would’ve made within the American system would be very, very different — and I don’t know if that one would’ve gotten distribution.” bit.ly/4ekNFn5

join the graphic design gestapo now :-D
We’re hiring at the National Design Studio of America, looking for the most talented designers across the nation. Government websites should feel premium: fast, clear, and easy to use. Right now, too many essential services are stuck on outdated tech and tangled processes, so people hit dead ends, bounce between forms, wait on hold, and give up, especially seniors and anyone without time to spare. We’re raising the standard and rebuilding the experience from the top down with a small, high-bar team. If you’re ready to come to DC to cut through the red tape, move fast, and ship improvements at national scale, or know someone who would, reach out to me!

literally a product designer
the most underrated hire right now is a great product person. when i say product person i'm def not talking about a product manager. perhaps i think there has to be somewhat of a new role. i don't have a good name for it yet but maybe something like "product thinker".. someone with an intuitive grasp of the product as it exists, where it's soft, where it sings, & how to iterate it toward something even sharper. in some sense, this person has to cohesively hold in their head where this product should be 2 years from now & work backwards from that. i say this cuz when building was hard, engineering was the bottleneck & the status hierarchy often reflected that. building is no longer hard. which means the variance in outcomes has shifted almost entirely to judgment on what to build, how to sequence it, & how to talk about it. & the story matters as much as the thing. internally, it organizes the team around a shared model of why. externally, it shapes the interpretive frame users bring to their first experience. you can't retrofit narrative onto a product & expect it to land, it has to be load bearing from the start. the rarest version of this person sits at the intersection of culture & deep technology. someone genuinely bilingual. they know what's technically possible & they know which cultural currents are real vs. ephemeral. that combo is what separates products that feel inevitable from products that feel assembled. before ppl clap back with this person has always been valuable, i know.. i am just saying now they might be the most *important* person in the room. their value compounds like never before.

Joe Gebbia has spent the past year sharing blatantly racist, islamaphobic and anti migrant views - sorry if not moved by his calls for better designs while his soul rots
First of Kind: The @jgebbia interview Why did Joe Gebbia go to Washington? I met with America’s first-ever Chief Design Officer last fall to find out. We met on the White House grounds to discuss his newly created role, the formation of @ndstudio, and how Joe plans to weave design into the fabric of U.S. federal government. 00:00 - Eisenhower Exec Office Bldg 01:34 - From Airbnb to Washington 04:39 - The Federal Retirement Problem 06:31 - The Mine in the Mountain 08:29 - Do Things That Don’t Scale 11:35 - The Julie Prototype 14:20 - Down to 60 Seconds 16:33 - Consumer-Grade Government 18:31 - Nixon’s Federal Beautification 20:22 - The National Design Studio 24:24 - Trust Through Design 27:43 - Building the Dream Team 31:22 - The Silicon Valley Coalition 35:33 - A Golden Age of Design Special thanks to Joe Gebbia and his team for making this conversation possible.
