Is club membership worth it? What have you done for me?” And I think even within our own club, if we accept the premise of that question, it forces us to start rattling off membership perks like this is a Costco card. And look, I love Costco, right? I’m not saying that as a slur. But I think the one thing that hasn’t been successful, and will continue not to be successful, is making this analogous to an entitlements card. I’ve said this to people: you don’t join a biker gang, you don’t join the Hells Angels, so you can get 10% off the price of gas at the pump. You don’t go riding every Sunday with your gang so you can get cashback rewards. That’s not what this thing is. And if it were, what you’d have is a consumer relationship. Consumer relationships have churn. There’s a lot of min-maxing on entitlements and benefits, and those entitlements are what you wind up getting priced on. Think about it: people join a biker gang because of the cut. They join because of what they wear and what each patch means. They join because they want to build relationships with other people they can count on. And a lot of these relationships, whether you’re a kid in high school or a billionaire industry titan, wind up opening your life to new adventures. I often compare community building here to what you see in politics or religion. I’ve probably said this every week on here: I see high-end community building in NFTs as being like politics or religion. Once you start approaching either politics or religion with, “Well, what do I get? Is membership worth it?” you’re really speeding past the best parts of what participating has to offer.
