#workplacennd reads from @GoldsmithsPress' Black Film British Cinema II.
The essay says mainstream #FilmIndustry gatekeeps so the global majority are stereotyped, marginalised or excluded.
Is this true? What’s the solution?

Wow, the show just ended, but what a surprise @workplacennd had at the end - a compilation of snippets of Sony Roberts/Orbitone/Tackle related releases covering soca, calypso, highlife, etc... we'll expand on that in a special video to be premiered at the Oct. 31 event👇

As I’ve said before, I’m not English.
I’m proud to be British. My family and ancestors have a link to Britain which spans centuries.
But in no way are we English. Yes, I was born in England, speak English and support the England football team. And indeed, I love England and the English people.
But to say I’m English is to take a ‘laissez-faire, anything-goes’ attitude to ethnicity, citizenship and identity. It also denies me my Asian heritage. The liberals (many of them in today’s Conservative Party) take this cosmopolitan approach to Englishness. They’re terrified of being called racist so they say that anyone, as long as they’re born here, can be English.
I take the conservative approach. Englishness is an ethnicity. There have been English people for centuries and we need to recognise this more if we are to start taking a more muscular approach to citizenship and nationality. And no, it’s not racist to say this.
Other countries have no qualms in limiting who can be part of their citizenry and use ethnicity and culture as criteria. Here, the dogma of multiculturalism has been so corrosive that some people don’t actually know who we are anymore.

Here's a reason offered for why Claudia Jones held an indoor parade.

The oil isn't a costume choice.
Jab masquerade comes out of emancipation — formerly enslaved people putting the plantation on their own bodies and walking it down the street. Grenada's Jab Jab plays it in oil at J'ouvert. Trinidad's Jab Molassie, the "molasses devil," carries its own version of the same memory.
The festival they're walking in has a sequence worth knowing.
After the 1958 Notting Hill riots, Claudia Jones organised London's first Caribbean carnival on 30 January 1959 — indoors, at St Pancras Town Hall in Camden, because a British winter made outdoors impossible. She set the date to match Trinidad's.
Four months later, on 17 May 1959, Kelso Cochrane was stabbed to death on Southam Street. Around a thousand people came to his funeral.
The street version arrived in 1966.
It started indoors because of the weather. It ended up outdoors anyway.

He should've called it ReTory UK, b/c frankly, that is what it is!
Credit to the person who wrote in to a letter to the editor to @DailyMirror, suggesting this name.
I've been using it ever since and I hope @10DowningStreet @labourpress @TheGreenParty etc. start doing the same.

I prefer the moniker given by someone who wrote a letter to the editor to the @DailyMirror:
ReTory UK.
I think all the other major political parties, @UKLabour @LibDems @TheGreenParty etc., should refer to them in this way.
Hopefully, that will bring the message home...
