Patrick Stewart died on Wednesday at 86, leaving a fortune estimated at $75 million. He grew up in a two-room house in Yorkshire with no hot water and no indoor toilet, sleeping behind a partition in his parents' bedroom.
In the video below, Stewart explains how he and his brother knew what kind of night was coming from the songs their father was singing on his way home.
Alfred Stewart came home from the war in 1945 as a regimental sergeant major in the Parachute Regiment. He worked Monday to Friday for a modest wage. On Friday nights he bathed in front of the fire, put on the blazer with his badge on it, and drank through the weekend.
Patrick and his brother Trevor listened from upstairs and learned to go down at the exact moment an argument turned, so they could put their bodies between their father and their mother.
The neighbours heard all of it. Someone would walk to a phone box and call the police. Stewart said the officers who came into his house decided his mother "must have provoked him," and the doctors who treated her told her a fight takes two people.
Decades later he found his father's war record. Severe shell shock in 1940, never treated. Specialists told him it was textbook untreated PTSD.
The money came too late to be any use. Stewart started on Star Trek: The Next Generation at $45,000 an episode and finished at $100,000. For Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 he was paid $14 million. His mother Gladys, a weaver, died in 1977. He was cast as Jean-Luc Picard ten years after that.
Once he could afford it, he and Trevor found a house to buy and give her so she could get out. She turned it down.

Sir Patrick Stewart reveals the moment he burst into tears in Jonathan Frakes’ arms during their final Star Trek journey.
Sir Patrick Stewart: “They say what you have to focus on in the sentence ‘The generation’s final journey begins’ is not the word final, but the word begins, because we could be beginning for years and years and years and years.”
“We got to the moment where Jonathan Frakes said to me, ‘Serving with you has been an honor.’ And I burst into tears and fell into his arms.”
“And those are substantial arms to fall into. If you’re going to fall into any arms…”
Conan O’Brien: “So you both started weeping and holding each other?”
“That’s a whole new kind of Star Trek movie. Captain, I love you.”
Sir Patrick Stewart: “Where no man has gone before.”

Rewatching this final scene of Star Trek: The Next Generation today hurts.
The world in which this show existed feels long gone.
Every week we watched on “network TV” a strong and virtuous male leader be celebrated.
We grappled with real philosophical questions without cynicism. We laughed without being “irony poisoned.”
We celebrated men and women working together in complementary collaboration—not in zero-sum competition.
That world feels gone, but it doesn’t have to be.
Most of us still hold these values.
We can tell stories like this again.

Patrick Stewart says he was told Star Trek would fail before becoming Picard
Jimmy Kimmel: “Did you ever imagine you'd still be playing Picard?”
Patrick Stewart: “They said, ‘don’t worry about that, you're not going to make it even through the first season, you cannot revive an iconic show like Star Trek was.’”
Jimmy Kimmel: “So, they convinced you to stay on by telling you the show wasn't going to work?”
Patrick Stewart: “No, exactly, this is how smart the people in Hollywood really are.”
Jimmy Kimmel: “That's pretty smart.”
Patrick Stewart: “They said, ‘come to Hollywood, we'll fly you first-class, get a nice place to live in, meet maybe some girls. Make some money for the first time in your life, and then go home.’”
Jimmy Kimmel: “Yeah, I mean part of it worked out that way.”
Patrick Stewart: “Believe me, it is the most important thing that ever happened in my life and my career.”
