for anyone struggling with the whole “fanfic writers don’t own their works” concept, i strongly suggest reading this legal article, which explores the blurred lines between copyright infringement, derivative works, and the rights fanfiction writers may hold over their own original contributions.
there is a fundamental difference between owning the intellectual property your work is based on and holding rights to the original writing you’ve created.
fanfiction writers do not own the characters or worlds they borrow, but that does not automatically mean their own creative contributions are devoid of copyright protection.
the distinction matters.

It's been obvious to me for a long time that a lot of readers don't have any idea why writers write. That's why they immediately interpret "engagement" to mean "fame" or "compensation" rather than community, and the interaction between perceiver and perceived.
