$5.7 billion gone: Binance suffers the biggest crypto heist on record The world's largest crypto exchange was drained on Thursday afternoon, US time, in what analysts are calling the biggest crypto theft ever. Arkham data shows more than $5.7 billion sitting in the attacker's wallet, including about $1.5 billion in bitcoin and $900 million in ether. Chainalysis puts the value at about $5.9 billion at the time of the theft, while Glassnode estimates $5.3 billion. Binance hasn't confirmed a total. It says $2.54 billion has been frozen so far, including about 1.57 billion USDT frozen by Tether and more than $800 million in USDC frozen by Circle. Deposits and withdrawals are suspended while the exchange works with law enforcement. Co-CEO Yi He says Binance "will cover all hacking losses" and that user funds are safe. CoinDesk reports that the attacker used an Ethereum feature called EIP-7702 to take control of a hot wallet. Investigator ZachXBT and security firm Blockaid say North Korea is likely behind it, though that hasn't been confirmed. Bitcoin dropped to about $77,000 on the news, and BNB fell 8%.
