🇺🇸🇧🇾🇪🇺🇨🇦 Nobody said a tonne of Belaruskali potash riding through Russia and across the Atlantic beats a hopper car from Saskatchewan on cost, distance, or cleanliness. That is not the issue. The test is whether American farms should stay 80% tied to one supplier while Ottawa is in a political trade war with their government. A second source does not have to win on previous arrangements. It simply has to exist. Save the “blood potash” sermon for the EU allies Canada is trying to join. In 2025 the EU still bought about $31 billion in Russian goods, including nearly $20 billion in energy and about $2 billion in fertilizer themselves. Russian fertilizer into Europe is basically flat versus pre-war. Brussels also took roughly €900 million in Russian phosphorus; about a fifth of its phosphorus imports. That same EU is still exporting tens of billions back the other way, including pharmaceuticals. So Europe can keep buying Russian plant food and Canadian politicians can still call a U.S. supply option a war crime. That is textbook hypocrisy. Saskatchewan potash is closer. It is also a lever. The moment it gets used as one, buyers look for another seller. If Belarus has no spare tonnes this year, the threat is empty this harvest. Forward contracts and extra capacity are not. Russia after the war is another option. None of that requires pretending the EU has clean hands either.
