ALT BRAZILIAN ACTIVISM GUIDE to Combat the Far Right ——— 1. Don't trust the neutrality of algorithms. Platforms are not neutral referees. They may limit reach of left-wing accounts and boost far-right content. Relying only on organic reach on social media is therefore risky. 2. Ignore far-right accounts. Don't engage with them, whether to correct, debate, or insult. The algorithm doesn't measure truth; it distributes more of whatever generates more engagement. Every reply, even a critical one, extends a post's reach. Without interaction, this content stays confined to its own bubble.

ALT 3. Centralize and decentralize at the same time. • Decentralized: Create many groups to produce quality content, without fake news. Use memes, infographics, news, rationaal argument, and humor. People of different professions, ages and regions react differently to different type of content, so the material should be tailored for each. • Centralized: Also keep large groups for specific actions, such as pushing hashtags into trending topics, mass-distributing content on a topic of the moment (for example, during a televised debate), and delivering campaign materials (images, text, memes). • Growth: Attract as many members as possible and ask each new member to share the group link. • Coordination: Discipline and tactical leadership make a difference. In Brazil, a single person coordinated actions in a huge group. If no one in your country has that vision, work to form a centralized core, which is essential for national-scale actions. ALT (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS SLIDE) 4. Go beyond open social networks. Besides X, Instagram and Facebook, send your material directly to groups of friends, college, work, and family. In Brazil, this is done through WhatsApp, in your country, use the most popular messaging app.

ALT 5. Prioritize those who can be persuaded. Don't waste energy trying to convert the far right; in the short term, it's unlikely. Focus on those who haven't formed an opinion yet or who shop openness. Don't respond to provocations; in the case of personal attacks, ignore and block. 6. Take to the streets too. Online mobilization is very important, but hold rallies, demonstrations, and popular actions. Talk and share material with kindness and without responding to provocations. In case of aggression, defend yourself, record everything on video, and contact the police. Your opponents will try to paint you as violent and control the narrative. Don't let them.
