Drake sued Universal. Now there's talk of the biggest record deal in history. So I pulled the U.S. Copyright Office records for 9 Drake albums. On every one, the label, not Drake, is named as author of the sound recordings those filings cover: "employer for hire." And in a sworn court declaration, Universal's CEO said the company owns the bulk of his recording catalog. The real question about Drake's next deal isn't the size of the check. It's who owns the records when the money runs out.
building slowly is incredibly underrated. co-signs will always be useful but their value is incredibly inconsistent.
